    Post war engraving of Frank D. Sloat Captain of Company A. In this engraving Captain Sloat is wearing the uniform of the New Haven Grays. Engraving is from the History of the New Haven Grays.
    Photo of Corporal William A. Goodwin. Taken in September or October 1862 by Filey & Gilbert, Chapel St. New Haven, CT. “Billy” as he was known was the first man to enlist in Company A. The historian of Company A called him the life of the company. Billy was shot in the side of the head and killed instantly at Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862. He now rests in Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven. Photo in collection of Andy DeCusati.
    Photo of a member of Company A of the 27th. Photo is from the Tuttle family album in the collection of the New Haven Colony Historical Society. It is believed to be Private Cyrus Tuttle of Company A. Notice cap brass in this and in previous photo. Photo taken in September or October of 1862.
    Post-war photo of Private Antonio Dardell, Company A, 27th CVI. Antonio is one of the few Chinese soldiers to serve in the Civil War. He was brought to the United States by a Guilford Sea Captain named White when he was nine years old. Educated at Clinton Academy, Antonio joined the 27th in August 1862. Photo taken from his newspaper obituary in January 1933. Antonio’s knapsack can be seen at the 102nd Infantry museum in the Golf Street Armory in New Haven, CT.
    Post-war photo of Private Sherwood S. Thompson, Company A, 27th CVI. At the time of his service Mr. Thompson was a single, 18-year-old clerk from New Haven. Photo taken from the book “Famous Men of New Haven County.”
    Unidentified Enlisted man, 27th CT Volunteers. BM: Wells & Collins, New Haven, CT. Photo is signed on back “Oct 22 Co A 27 CV”. Oct. 22, 1862 was the date of muster-in for the 27th CT & also the day they left the state for the war.

    Post-war photo of Private Harvey Beach, Company B, 27th CVI. At the time of his service Mr. Beach was a married, 27-year-old miller from Branford. Uniform is from service in post-war Militia. Photo from book “Famous men of New Haven County.”

    Veterans of Company C

    Photo of unknown officer, believed to be Captain Addison C. Taylor of Company C, 27th CVI. However, no positive ID can be had. Capt. Taylor died at his home in New Haven on March 13, 1863, of wounds received at Fredericksburg. Photo in collection of Andy DeCusati.
    1st Lt. William R. Harmount. Enlisted 8/16/62 as 1st Lt.. Company C, 27th CT, to serve nine months. Fought at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, where he was captured along with Co. C and every other company of the 27th except Cos. D & F, which went on to serve at Gettysburg. He was paroled 5/23/63 & mustered out 7/27/63. BM: Moulthrop & Williams, New Haven, CT.
    Photo of Private George E. Treadwell, Company C, 27th CVI. Photo taken in winter of 1862-63 in camp at Falmouth, Va. Treadwell was promoted to the Color Guard sometime after Fredericksburg. In this tintype, you can see Treadwell is wearing the dark blue overcoat issued by the state of Connecticut. Photo in collection of Andy DeCusati.


    Veterans of Company D

    War-time photo of Captain Cornelius DuBois, Company D, 27th CVI. Prior to service in the 27th Captain DuBois served as a private in the 10th company of the 7th New York National Guards from April 1861 to July 1862 when he came to New Haven to raise Company D of the 27th CVI. After serving with the 27th and recovering from an arm wound he received at Gettysburg, Captain DuBois joined the 20th CVI as the adjutant. He performed an act of bravery at the Battle of Resaca, Georgia, for which he was later promoted Major and Lieutenant Colonel by brevet. He resigned from the 20th in mid-1864. He died sometime between February 1880 and January 1883. Photo in collection of Andy DeCusati.

    Post-war photo of Benjamin E. Brown, Musician, Company E, 27th CVI. Photo taken when Mr. Brown was Captain of the New Haven Grays. Sometime in the 1880’s. He was 18 when he served in the 27th. Note the 2nd Corps Badge on his chest. Photo collection of New Haven colony Historical Society.

    War-time photo of Lieutenant Winthrop D. Sheldon Company H, 27th CVI. Photo taken from the book, “Yale Men in the Civil War.” Photo said to be taken just after release from prison. Enlisted as Private, he rose through the ranks. Lieutenant Sheldon is the author of a history of the 27th CVI.
    War-time photo of Franklin Ellsworth Alling, Corporal, Company H, 27th CVI. Corporal Alling was killed in action at Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862. He was a member of the Yale class of 1865. Photo from "Yale Men in the Civil War." He now rests in Grove Street Cemetery in New Haven.

    1865 photo of Sergeant James Brand of Company I, 27th CVI. Bearer of the state flag through the nine months of his service. It was James Brand who, with the help of the other color bearer, Sergeant John Sanford of Company C, helped Major Coburn out of the Wheatfield after he was stunned by a shell. Sergeant Brand graduated from Yale in 1865 when this photo was taken. Photo from “Yale men in the Civil War.”
